Today is Monday, February 23. Me and my brother had Science lab today in Mom school. We made crystals out of metal! The metal we used to make the crystals is Bismuth. Bismuth is a heavy shiny metal that melts. Bismuth is very pretty but Bismuth crystals are prettier. Bismuth melts with low heat and it is easy to make the crystals. Our mom helped us because we had to use the stove to make these crystals.
Bismuth is a metal on the Periodic Table of Elements. It is BI 83. Bismuth is a heavy metal. It is used to make fishing sinkers and is used instead of lead. Bismuth metal looks like Pyrite except it is silver. Bismuth is in Pepto Bismol too!
Our lab is to turn metal into a crystal with heat. We are trying to find out how hot it needs to be to melt this metal and what happens when it melts.
We used two stainless steel pots. We picked small pots so they would be easy to handle. Mom bought one pound of Bismuth metal. We put the metal in the first pot and turned on the heat. We turned the heat on low and waited for the Bismuth to melt. It needed more heat! We turned the heat to medium and then medium high. When the Bismuth was on high the metal started to melt. We turned on the heat for the second pot. The second pot is empty..
The Bismuth metal melted into a shiny puddle. The Bismuth was gray on top when it melted. This gray stuff is not good for the crystals so we used a spoon to get it off the puddle. We turned the heat off for the empty pot. We poured the Bismuth into the empty pot. It will take a long time for the Bismuth to cool off.
The Bismuth started to be solid. A solid is something that is not a liquid. A liquid is like water or juice or the melted Bismuth. Solids have little parts that are close together. Liquids have small parts that are not close together. My Mom helped us pour the rest of the liquid Bismuth into another dish when the Bismuth moved like Jello.
The Bismuth started growing crystals! They were squares and different colors. The pot with the Bismuth took a long time to cool down. When the Bismuth crystals were solid we took them out of the pot. These are the ones we made! We will make more of them soon!
